You do not need a referral to book an appointment with a chiropractor.
On your first visit, the chiropractor will ask you to fill in a health history form. Then he will review your history and current health with you.
Then your chiropractor will conduct an assessment.
Chiropractors are highly trained in a variety of diagnostic techniques, including physical examination, orthopedic and neurological testing, radiographic interpretation and direct palpation of joint movement. These techniques indicate to the doctor the areas of your body that are not working properly.
Your chiropractor might order x-rays or other imaging systems to diagnose the source of your condition.
She will then tell you what she finds and recommend a specific course of treatment.
Chiropractors use of manual adjustments and related therapies such as mobilization, massage, heat, light and ultrasound.
The primary treatment is a chiropractic adjustment. It is gentle, controlled and directed pressure that helps to restore the spine's ability to function and relieve nerve interference.
Fees
Most chiropractors follow the recommended fee schedule from the Alberta College and Association of Chiropractors. An initial consultation typically costs between $60 and $100 depending on the extent of the assessment. Treatments after the initial assessment range between $40 and $50 per visit.
It is entirely appropriate to ask what the fees are when you book your first appointment. Also, make sure you inform your chiropractor if you are injured in a motor vehicle or workplace accident.
If you have extended health care, your plan might include coverage for chiropractic treatments. If you suffer an injury in a motor vehicle accident, coverage is also available from your auto insurance provider at no charge. Please visit the Health Insurance page for more information.
