Elite athletes and weekend warriors alike have long recognized the value of chiropractic for keeping them in prime playing condition and for treating injuries.

During a study at the World Hockey Championships, of the players who suffered a muscle-related injury, 80 per cent were treated with chiropractic treatments consisting of soft tissue massage, low impact manipulation and mobilization exercises.

Key highlights from the study, conducted on the New Zealand men’s team from the 2007 World Ice Hockey Championships, include:

  • The most common conditions presenting for treatment involved muscle, joint and tendon injuries
  • The majority of injuries were acute and new onset, occurring through a blunt contact mechanism
  • Chiropractic treatment was delivered to both joint and soft tissues equally and treatment typically incorporated HVLA spinal manipulation, soft tissue massage techniques, extremity mobilizations along with rehab/strengthening and stretching techniques
  • 19 of 22 players presented for chiropractic care at least once
  • 80 per cent of those injured were treated with four or fewer treatments, with treatment lasting 15 minutes on average
  • 86 per cent of reported treatment was for the management of acute pain/symptoms with 13 per cent for non-symptomatic or functional improvement

If hockey injuries can be treated with the help of chiropractic, what effect could it have on your life?
