In this blog series, we feature a member of the Chiropractic Association of Alberta each month.

Dr. Scott Fisher has been a chiropractor for fourteen years and is currently practicing at Ascent Health and Sport Therapy in Calgary. Dr. Fisher takes pride in the multidisciplinary clinic him and his team are creating with chiros, physio and massage therapists, and performance coaches.

Why was joining the Association important to you?

Since the separation of the association and the college, I think the association plays more of a significant role in directing energy and effort towards making sure chiropractors have a seat at the right table, with the right people. The Association establishes a voice for chiropractors throughout Alberta and its communities.

What advice would you provide to students entering or advancing their career as a chiropractor?

Find a mentor - someone that's been in practice for some time, someone that has built and sustained a practice, has a good work life balance, and aligns with you in your values.  Recognize that you're going to evolve and change as a person and as a practitioner - know that you're going to evolve and change and embrace that. Don't make absolute decisions now and make sure your style of practice aligns with our values. Aligning your practice with your values helps create enthusiasm, excitement, and passion which will naturally help you establish your name and reputation.

What is your hope for chiropractors of the future?

I think there is a lot on the technology aspect, and I hope chiropractors embrace advancements in technology to enhance patient care while maintaining their strengths in diagnosis, manual therapy, and rehabilitation. I hope that chiropractors continue to get that cultural authority within Alberta, and within Canada in general -  we can fill the gap that is in the healthcare industry as far as maintaining mobility and strength/function as individuals age.

What do you most enjoy about the chiropractic profession?

For one, I am excited and proud of the clinic that we're building at Ascent Health and Sport Therapy. So, I'm excited to continue to invest and to grow into that and to expand what it is that we can offer and try to level up what a private practice looks like. Second, I always enjoy collaborating with patients to find a meaningful goal and building a plan together to achieve it. I love the moment when people realize they can do more than they thought possible.
