Carstairs Chiropractor Weighs In on Alberta’s New CPiRLS Reporting System
A recent story in The Albertan highlights how Alberta chiropractors are embracing a new tool designed to enhance patient safety and strengthen clinical practice across the province.
The Chiropractic Association of Alberta has officially launched the Chiropractic Patient Incident Reporting and Learning System (CPiRLS), a confidential, profession-led reporting system that helps practitioners identify trends, learn from real-world cases, and reduce the likelihood of similar patient safety incidents in the future.
Carstairs chiropractor and mayor Dr. Dean Allan shared his perspective on the system, calling it “a good learning tool” that will help chiropractors stay proactive and informed. He noted that while chiropractors have always shared information with one another, CPiRLS formalizes and accelerates that learning in a safe, anonymous environment.
“It is something definitely new and I think it is going to be a good thing,” Allan said in the article. “It’s a confidential way to learn from everybody.”
CPiRLS allows chiropractors to report:
- incidents that occur during care,
- near misses, and
- potential risks spotted before harm happens.
All reports are anonymous and never shared with regulators, insurers, or government. The goal is simple: strengthen patient safety while supporting continuous quality improvement within chiropractic care.
CAA Board Chair Dr. Jacqueline Boyd explained that CPiRLS aligns Alberta’s chiropractic profession with established practices across the broader health-care landscape, where incident reporting is a key component of building safer, more effective systems.
By transforming reported experiences into practice insights, safety notices, and evidence-informed guidance, CPiRLS will help raise the standard of care in clinics across Alberta.
