Introducing CPiRLS: A New Era of Patient Safety for Alberta Chiropractors
The Chiropractic Association of Alberta (CAA) is proud to launch the Chiropractic Patient Incident Reporting and Learning System (CPiRLS) — a secure, confidential, and non‑punitive platform designed to help Alberta chiropractors learn from patient‑safety incidents and continuously improve the care they provide.
As the first province‑wide implementation of CPiRLS in Canada, this initiative marks an important milestone in our commitment to supporting a Just Culture within the chiropractic profession.
What Is CPiRLS?
CPiRLS is a confidential reporting and learning system originally developed by the Royal College of Chiropractors in the UK. Its purpose is simple: help chiropractors report, analyze, and learn from patient‑safety events in an environment built on trust, openness, and support.
Through CPiRLS, Alberta chiropractors can report:
- Incidents that occurred (RED)
- Near misses (AMBER)
- Potential risks identified before harm occurred (GREEN)
Whether an incident actually happened or simply made you stop and think, it’s worth reporting — because every submission helps the entire profession learn and improve.
Why CPiRLS Matters
Bringing Just Culture to Life
CPiRLS supports the CAA’s Just Culture Position Statement by offering a safe, non‑punitive way for members to reflect on their practice without fear of blame or regulatory consequences.
Creating Shared Learning
When chiropractors report experiences, CPiRLS identifies trends and translates them into:
- Safety Notices
- Recommendations
- Practice insights
This helps prevent similar issues in other practices and raises the standard of care across Alberta.
Strengthening Trust
A transparent, supportive reporting system demonstrates the profession’s dedication to accountability, continuous learning, and patient‑centered care.
How CPiRLS Works
1. Log in through the CAA Member Portal
Members can access CPiRLS directly from the portal using a secure login.
2. Select the incident type
Choose the appropriate category:
- RED: An incident occurred
- AMBER: A near miss
- GREEN: A potential risk
3. Submit a confidential report
The form is simple. CPiRLS does not collect identifiable information. Reports remain anonymous and confidential.
4. Learn from shared insights
A CPiRLS team reviews aggregated reports and shares province‑wide safety trends with members through official Safety Notices.
Privacy and Confidentiality
CPiRLS is designed to protect your privacy:
- No personal or identifying details are collected
- Reports are never shared with regulators, insurers, or government
- All information is used only for learning and system improvement
- Findings are always summarized and de‑identified
This ensures chiropractors can report incidents with confidence and openness.
Benefits of CPiRLS
For Chiropractors:
- Identifies practice vulnerabilities
